Experience of Work

At St Martin’s our emphasis is on students learning the skills and knowledge they need to be better prepared for adulthood and their next destination after college. Communication and independence are fundamental areas to their future, and our aim is for each student to have a functional communication system and as much independence as possible before they leave St Martin’s.
To support this, where appropriate, students will have opportunities to carry out meaningful experiences of work that reflects their interests. These can be both internal within St Martin’s and externally.

Some of our students may access opportunities of experiences of work throughout the year and others may be supported into paid employment or volunteering positions depending on the needs and desires of the individual.
We believe experience of work is about increasing independence and enrichment in all areas of life. It is essential that they should gain experience and confidence in as wide a variety of activities as possible to broaden their choices as they transition to the next stage of their adult life.
